Procedures Q&A

What type of anesthesia is required for Plastic Surgery?

Most plastic surgery operations can be performed safely under Local Anesthesia with Intravenous Sedation administered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist. Lower body surgeries such as abdominoplasty are usually performed under Spinal Anesthesia. We work with the same anesthesiologist every day in a private surgical center, meeting the highest standards of safety required by the American Association For Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF).

What happens after surgery?

Patients having facelifts, breast reductions, abdominoplasty and body sculpting procedures are taken care of post-operatively by one of our Private Duty Nurses for 24 – 48 hrs. These nurses are trained in monitoring your recovery and assisting in a rapid recovery.

How long do I need to stay in New York City?

Most patients from outside the United States who undergo facelifts remain in New York for 10 – 14 days and are constantly attended to by our office staff. Patients who undergo surgery of the eyelids, nose, breasts, or liposuction, usually remain about 1 week.

What can you expect from some of the surgical procedures I do?

Nose (Rhinoplasty)

Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, average time 1-2 hours. No packing, minimal bruising and swelling, minimal pain. 1-week recovery. I do not perform the same operation on every patient. The nose should fit the face and be pleasing to the patient. If normal aesthetic proportions are maintained, a nose will look natural.

“A good rhinoplasty refines the nose but the patient should look like they were born with that nose”.

Eyelids (Blepharoplasty)

Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, average time 1 hour. Some swelling and bruising that usually resolves in 1 week. Minimal or no pain. Invisible scars. Size, shape, and expression of your eyes remain the same that ensures a natural result. Eyelid surgery should last 15 – 20 years.

Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, average time 3 1/2 hrs. Recovery is usually 10 – 14 days. Modern facelifts have shorter scars and quicker recovery time. Surgery is often combined with fat grafting and fillers as well as skin rejuvenation with chemical peels or lasers. Patients usually have minimal bruising and swelling as well as moderate pain for several days. Scars are hidden in natural lines. Patients look rested, fresher, younger, often like they lost weight, but totally natural. A well-performed face and neck lift usually lasts 10 – 12 years or longer.

Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation or epidural anesthesia, average time 1 -2 hours. Recovery is usually 1 week. Liposuction is the most popular cosmetic operation. It is used to recontour the hips, thighs, knees, abdomen, neck and arms. Patients usually have moderate bruising and swelling as well as minimal to moderate pain. Patients need to know that weight must be maintained or fat will accumulate in other areas.

Breast Augmentation

Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, average time 1 hour. Recovery is usually 1 week. Implants can be placed beneath the muscle or beneath the gland. This will be determined based on your needs during the preoperative consultation.

Breast Reduction/Lift (Mastopexy)

Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, average time 2-3 hours. Recovery is usually 1 week. Age, pregnancy, and weight fluctuation all effect breast structure. The goal is to restore breast shape and nipple position to a natural and youthful appearance. All efforts are made to minimize scars placed on the breast.

Body Scultping/Abdominoplasty

Local anesthesia with intravenous sedation or epidural anesthesia, average time 1 -2 hours. Recovery is usually 1 week. Moderate pain. Recovery is usually 7-10 days. Body sculpting includes: abdomen, arms, thighs, legs.

Fillers, Botox, Fat Grafting

Most common cosmetic procedures. These are often done in combination with facial surgery.

Skin Rejuvenation

Peels, laser, dermabrasion. To improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles and sun damage. These are often performed at same time as Facelift or Eyelid Surgery.

Combination Procedures

Very often patients inquire about surgery on several areas. Commonly combined procedures are facelift and eyelidplasty with breast reduction or lifting or abdominoplasty and liposuction. I operate very efficiently and can usually keep these combined procedures to less then 5 hours of surgery. Because general anesthesia is not used and the operating time is less than 6 hours, the risks and possible complications are minimized. The advantages of doing combined procedures when possible are one anesthesia and one recovery period. This means less down time, and less anesthesia.
